Larry Rogers was a good boy. Although I saw him almost everyday, I never realized that he was born the day after I was. Larry was a farm boy, and he seemed to like it. He was in 4H and I'm willing to bet he participated in the local Grange, probably Pike Grange. Each morning I saw him on the bus and I took him for granted, as all of us took one another at that age.

I remember when one of the bullies of the bus took my glasses and broke them in half. The bully and his buddies thought it was so cool. Who stepped up to help me? Larry Rogers. He was no one to triffle with and he came on fast and hard. Yet, Larry was one of the most live-and-let-live people I've ever known. If you don't bother him or someone else, you'll be fine; but do otherwise, and he'd be on you like a fly on fly paper.

I considered Larry my friend, even though we never chummed around. I respected him because he was a fair, decent guy. Larry did not deserve to die in Vietnam. None of our boys deserved to die in that God-forsaken war. I'll never forget Larry as long as I live and I still cry about his passing. Someday I'll see him again, and then we'll become better friends.

I did not know David Brooks real well, but he was a good friend to another good friend of mine. He was a fair fellow who didn't bother anyone. He was a hard worker and a smart person. I morn his passing simply because he should be in his late 40s with a wife, children, and grandkids running around the house. Dave and Larry were not the only ones who perished in Vietnam. All of the kids and grandkids they would have had if they had lived to become grown men also died with them.
