Where We Stand
and H.R. 4205There seems to be little hope for the passage of any radiation-compensation legislation this session of congress. It's politics as usual. President Clinton and former VA secretary, tongo West, have been accused of dragging their feet. The USA Today series reveals the shocking extent of radioactive contamination in the U.S.
Several recent articles make us more than suspicious that the U.S. and its allies in the Gulf War that used depleted uranium are linked to a conspiracy to deny that the illness of any of their troops, men and women, were caused by depleted uranium. The DoD continues to manipulate and withold important research data. Dr. Irwin D. Bross comments on the Institute of Medicine study's conclusion that "There is no conclusive evidence that nerve gas, uranium, or military vaccinations caused the Gulf War syndrome among thousands of Gulf War veterans.
Immediate Action
Needed On
H.R. 4205DAV National Legislative Director, Joe Violante, has urged us to call our elected officials to ensure that H.R. 4204 includes the following provisions:
1) Require the VA to assist claimants in developing all evidence necessary to support their claims.
2) Permit retired members of the Armed Forces who have a service-connected disability to receive military retirement pay concurrently with veterans' disability compensation.
3) Extend eligibility for medical care under CHAMPUS and TRICARE to persons over age 64.
4) Authoriize the VA to furnish headstone or markers for marked grave of certain individuals.
