Dr. Rosen's Letter
to President ClintonMay 18, 2000
The Honorable William J. Clinton
President of the United States
The White House
Washington, D.C. 20500Dear Mr. President,
Atomic Veterans and their survivors have been struggling in vain for years to secure justice for themselves and their families but only a few scraps have been thrown their way.
Senator Rockefeller has asked that VA secretary, Mr. Tongo West, use his authority to make radiogenic diseases such as brain, colon, lung and prostate cancer presumptive. Mr. Dobmeir, National Commander of the DAV has also asked that Mr. West make more diseases presumptive.
As a reminder, former VA Secretary Jesse Brown announced that Vietnam veterans with prostate cancer, acute and sub-acute peripheral neuropathy are entitled to disability payments. Why can't your current VA secretary do the same for the Atomic Veterans?
Your Vice-President, Mr. Gore, said recently in an address to veterans in Little Rock, "We don't give our veterans anything. You have earned what you get with blood, sweat, and tears." He was absolutely right.
What causes Mr. West to hold back when VA scientists have informed him that these diseases are caused by radiation? It can't be lack of funds because the government recently reported an enormous surplus. Certainly, you haven't ordered him to turn his back on us because you think we are too insignificant to be taken seriously?
Please, Mr. President, order Mr. West now to make the radiogenic diseases mentioned above presumptive for veterans who were exposed to radiation during the occupations of Hiroshima and Nagasaki and participation in atmospheric nuclear bomb tests. This is long overdue!
A reply to our concerns would be greatly appreciated.
Sincerely Yours,
Oscar Rosen, Ph.D.
[WWII veteran and Atomic Veteran]
